Kinja'd!!!

This “End Speed Limit” sign has been missing since winter. I assumed a plow knocked it down but it has yet to resurface. It is NOT lying in the grass next to the highway. I checked once the snow melted.

It ends the 45mph limit on County Highway V in the town of Grafton, and marks the beginning of the 55mph limit as the highway merges with State Highway 32 and becomes four lanes.

Now the intersection upcoming is slated for redesign with traffic lights sometime in 2016, so that may be the answer....

I have reached out to the Ozaukee Highway Dept to see what’s up.

The reason I ask your opinion? I continue to do 45mph until the 55mph limit sign miles ahead on Hwy 32, as is the law since there is no sign stating otherwise. People used to the area (but not used to following signs that may or may not be present) are speeding up to 55mph+.

What would you do? Keep going 45(ish) and get blown past by the people still thinking its 55? Or join the club and hope there’s no officer waiting at the Park And Ride on the right up ahead?

Does the sign on the opposite side of the road state 45? If so then I’d go ahead and speed up to 55 as that is what it is on the other side of the road.

I didn’t steal it to use for parts for my rat rod ... probably.

As somebody who rarely speeds (no, really), I would obey the signs as they are, not as they were. If you got stopped, you might win in court, but is it worth the hassle?

Opposite of where the sign was, the limit drops from 55 to 45. So after passing the now-missing sign, everyone opposite is going 55+

I’d base it on if my car stood out.

General boring CUV/Camry/Accord in decent condition I’m going with the flow.

Something sporty, particularly ratty, dark tint, modified, etc. makes you a target if the cop wants to pick one from the herd because it’s more likely to have secondary violations. I’d go speed limit +~10% in those.

Ah, so that’s why you stopped to see if it was there.

Other things that complicate... things, is there are right and left hand exits to other roads (the reason for the traffic light additions due soon) so if I saw someone going 45 in the left lane when I THOUGHT it was 55 still I’d be pissed. And its dangerous.

I don’t understand why they would have an “ end speed limit” sign in the first place. Why wouldn’t they just put a “speed limit 55" sign where it starts to be 55?

I’d continue driving it as I always have, but the likelihood of being pulled over for 10-over here is not that high. How long of a distance until the first 55 sign? If it’s far, it may make a difference.

In my opinion, spirit of the law > letter of the law. I’d go 55.

I am not a lawyer.

I got out of a ticket once because of a similar situation. Because of where the speed limit signs were located, one half-mile segment of the road was 45 mph one direction, 55 mph the other. I was on the 45 side doing 55 and got caught. The ticket was dismissed. The signs were fixed a couple of weeks later.

This is obviously a case where you need to take the law into your own hands. Put up a wooden post and hand-scrawled in crayon “END SPEED LIMIT” sign.

A clearly defined boundary? Maybe just having another 55MPH sign would blur the distinction of where each zone is.

Also, the areas like Takuro is discussing are usually when big country highways pass through small towns, so effectively the 45MPH limit is interrupting an area of a greater 55MPH road.

True. But I usually hang in the right lane. There is a long stretch of a north-south artery here in Austin that is currently under construction and is posted at 55. Before that, it’s 65, and very few people obey the 55, even though it’s a construction zone. There’s really nowhere for the cops to sit on the 55 portion, but I usually still sit in the right lane with my cruise on 55. Chillin’.

All of the ‘Basic Rule’ states have them. In those places the speed limit on highways is 55 (or whatever the rule says, but I’m only aware of ones that are 55) unless otherwise posted. OR and TX are both places I’ve lived that had that. VA has a basic rule for dirt roads at 35 mph (used to be 55 until last yearish).

Well I can tell you where one USED to be.... There’s a few more in the Saukville and Cedarburg areas. On some small roads passing farms and rich subdivisions.

VA’s is indeed 35 for dirt roads and 55 for paved roads, although some of the narrower rural paved roads are a bit, um, adventurous at 55.

In your posted photo is that an intersection where the truck is waiting on the left and what appears to be a turn lane on the right? If that is an intersection what is your state speed limit for unposted roads? If that is indeed an intersection I would accelerate to the state speed limit for unposted roads after passing that intersection.

Actually... in my town, there is a short stretch in which there are paired 35mph signs at one point each way, and paired 45mph at another point. The 45 to 35 direction technically remains 45 until the sign, probably upward of a quarter mile, and the 35 to 45 direction remains 35. A mere hundred feet or so ahead of where it *actually* becomes 45 is where the cops park, behind a restaurant, waiting for people to come over the hill. Yeah.

It is and quoting the WISDOT lawbook: (h) In the absence of any other fixed limits or the posting of limits as required or authorized by law, 55 miles per hour.

I have never seen this is Texas...? They are set by statute, but cities can raise/lower if engineered properly. The state requires speed limit signs at all speed limit changes.

Unless you mean the TX state statutes act like a basic rule...? Curious.

I feel like Texas is way too sparse with speed limit signs. I’d like to have them at every highway entrance for example. I can’t say I’ve seen end speed limit signs. The dumbest sign is the “Guardrail Damage Ahead” sign though.

Kinja'd!!! jariten1781 > Gone

Oh they definitely had ‘End of XX Limit’ signs when I lived there, been well over a decade since though. Sometimes it would be end XX begin YY on the same sign but not always. I specifically remember them on 21 and 6 as well as a number of farm-market roads. Don’t know if was because it was because it was a basic rule state or just a vagary of signage...never really looked into it.

04/07/2016 at 18:14

Kinja'd!!!1

Yea, I’d agree. You can go miles (10s of miles) between them in some places.

The “Guardrail Damage Ahead” sign is just warning you to crash somewhere else. That guardrail will accept no more accidents until it’s fixed (6 months later). And then it will be replaced with another improperly built one that will impale your car...

I’m pretty sure I drive ten over the limit everywhere in CA, because everyone else is. The unwritten rule is to not break 80 or they see it as reckless, I keep it at 75 and cops pass me.
